Module Two: Lesson Two
Introduction
As we begin Lesson Two, we are going to revisit the Robin McWilliam's Early Intervention in Natural Environments (EINE): Five-Component Model as described in the article, Early Intervention in Natural Environments: A Five-Component Model, written by Dr. McWilliam for use in this online curriculum. In Module Two: Lesson One, we established that the Early Steps service delivery model is founded in large part on the EINE model which has the following five components and practices:
| Component |
Practice |
1. Understanding the Family Ecology
Establishing a positive relationship and emphasizing the principle that all growth and development take place within the context of relationships and viewing the child within the context of the family environment. |
Ecomap |
2. Functional Intervention Planning
Stating Individualized Family Support Plan (IFSP) outcomes as basic functional outcomes that the child will learn to enhance development and that are important to the family and other primary caregivers. |
Routines-Based Interview |
3. Integrated Services
Utilizing a primary service provider, based on the child's needs and family's concerns and priorities, who works with the child and caregiver(s) and collaborates with other service providers on the team through consultation and joint home visits, resulting in an integrated, cohesive delivery of services. |
Primary Service Provider |
4. Effective Home Visits
Providing emotional, informational, and material support to families as the basis for family-centered, home-based, early intervention, and attending to the complex, interrelated needs of developing children and their families. |
Support-Based Home Visits |
5. Collaborative Consultation to Child Care
Using an individualized-within-routines approach with children in group-care settings, which involves joining the child in whatever the child is engaged in, during regular classroom routines, demonstrating for the teaching staff, and learning from the teaching staff. |
Integrated Services |
In Lesson One, you learned the purposes and the practice for the first component, Understanding the Family Ecology. In this lesson, you will learn more about the second component, Functional Intervention Planning. As in Module Two: Lesson One, material on the EINE model is extracted directly from both the McWilliam teleconference presented in August, 2004, and his article entitled, Early Intervention in Natural Environments: A Five-Component Model, For the references cited by Dr. McWilliam, please see the full version of the article in the Resource Bank.
